Gerrard backed to replace Klopp

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has backed Steven Gerrard to replace Jurgen Klopp on the Anfield bench.

The Rangers extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 19 points with an Old Firm derby win over rivals Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday.

And Thompson believes that if starting with the Rangers was good enough for Souness to get the Liverpool job, then Gerrard must have a good chance of succeeding Klopp.

He told the Paddy Power podcast, From The Horse’s Mouth:

“If it was good enough for Graeme to get his first managerial job at Rangers and then take Liverpool’s back from him, I think Steven has a good chance of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

“The Rangers were in a better position when Graeme got in there than when they were under Stevie.

“Stevie took on a very difficult job at Rangers. It wasn’t easy to get in there with Celtic’s success.

“I was afraid for him because I thought they were so far behind that it would be five to seven years before you could turn things around.

“But Celtic got a bit sloppy and Stevie has drafted very well. So obviously he’s the one that comes to mind when it comes to Liverpool’s next manager. “
