Swansea City wants Harry Wilson, according to reports. It gives Liverpool a chance to repeat a trick that worked wonderfully last season.
Sky Sports claims Swansea City has already made an offer to loan Harry Wilson. Liverpool rejected it, however, wanting a “greater financial commitment”.
But it certainly seems like the Swans want the player. Steve Cooper, a former Liverpool manager and current Swansea manager, also spoke openly about the player on Thursday. He left no doubt that he values him and would like him very much at the club.
And with all this interest, Liverpool should seriously consider repeating a trick that worked wonders last season.
Commitment
So Liverpool want a “bigger financial commitment” if they are going to send Wilson to Swansea. There’s a good reason for that too, and it brings us to a certain player: Rhian Brewster.
Liverpool sold the player for £ 23.5m to Sheffield United in the transfer window, although they rated him highly. Why? Because they did not trust a loan.
With a loan, the receiving club has no commitment to develop the player. If things get tough or they change their mind, there is no incentive to keep using them and giving the player minutes. This is exactly what happened to Wilson at Bournemouth last season.
He played no more than 45 minutes after the restart as Bournemouth struggled for relegation. Instead, they used long-term players and those in which they had interests. And that will have worried Liverpool.
According to the Daily Mail, that’s why they sold Brewster. They made sure Sheffield United had no choice but to develop the player as they had committed a large amount of money to him. There is a buyback clause in the deal, in case Liverpool decides it has developed enough.
The key here, however, is that Liverpool found a club that was willing to pay £ 23.5 million for a player who has never played in the Premier League. In fact, he only has six months of senior football under his belt, all in the Championship.
But that also ties in with Wilson.
Gain the trust
Brewster spent six months on loan at Swansea City last season. He also scored 11 goals in that time, earning him enough of a reputation for Sheffield United to pay that money.
It must be a trick worth repeating. Liverpool can trust Swansea and Steve Cooper, after all. He is a former Liverpool youth coach who worked with Wilson.
So Liverpool can be confident that they develop the players, they know how they develop the players and they have a recent history of doing very well. This, then, is a deal that could work wonderfully well.
Brewster spent six months there and became a £ 23 million player. There’s no reason why Wilson, a more experienced and well-rounded player, can’t go there and develop lower Cooper and increase his value. A value Liverpool reportedly already hold at £ 20 million.
It’s a trick that worked once for Liverpool and could work again.
