The latest transfer rumor associated with Liverpool certainly continues a trend that has been evident at the club for several years.
He has recently been linked to young Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun with a move to Anfield next summer. His current contract with the Gunners will expire at the end of the season, and there is still no sign of an extension.
This is nothing more than rumor at this stage, but if it were true, it would certainly fit a pattern. Liverpool have been here before with previous signings, and could point to what could happen if interest in Balogun is genuine.
Given that Liverpool and Arsenal play in the same country, any deal for a free agent should be completed next summer. And due to the age of the player, there would also have to be an agreed compensation fee at a later date.
Liverpool have traveled this path before in recent years, with Chelsea being the club that has been the source of new young signings. Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster are two players who have made the switch from Stamford Bridge to Anfield.
When they were both on the books in Liverpool, there was significant promise surrounding each of them that they would turn out to be the next big thing. While neither of them managed to secure long-term futures at Anfield, he will still have to say that it was a good deal for the Reds.
Simply put, it is a low risk with a high potential reward strategy that the club has employed. Hiring young players with bags of promise for a relatively low fee, but then selling them for a significant profit, even though each had potential to play for the first team.

While it cost Liverpool very little, Bournemouth shelled £ 19m for Solanke, while Sheffield United completed a £ 23.5m deal for Brewster. That’s a significant gain from what the Reds paid for the young duo, and in hindsight it was certainly worth the relatively small bet of signing them in the first place.
In the case of Balogun, if the rumors are true, Liverpool would of course want him to be a success at Anfield in the long run. By comparison, he has played far more first-team football than Solanke or Brewster at Chelsea before coming to Merseyside.
Liverpool have established themselves as one of the best teams in Europe under the leadership of Jürgen Klopp, and he has shown that he is capable of bringing high-quality youngsters to the academy. Trent Alexander-Arnold was the first to make a name for himself, while Curtis Jones is the latest to break into the team as a regular. You can also consider Neco Williams, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, who have had opportunities for the past 12 months.
The message is clear: if you sign for Liverpool, you will always have the opportunity to make a career out of Anfield. And if for whatever reason things don’t work out, the club will do its best to find the right club for them. It all comes down to the duty of care that Liverpool always fulfills when looking after its players.
Liverpool’s ties to Balogun should come as no surprise; in fact, it would be more surprising if they weren’t interested in one of the young talents in English football who will soon be out of a contract. But if the links are true, it would certainly be a worthwhile gamble and could end up helping the club significantly in the long and short term.
