‘Klopp will stay with Adrian’
Former Liverpool star Michael Thomas believes Adrian was not helped by poor performances by defenders against him at Villa Park on Sunday night.
The Reds goalkeeper, who made his first start to the season in place of the injured Alisson, received strong criticism for his performance in Liverpool’s 7-2 loss.
But Thomas, speaking to CaughtOffside, said of Adrian’s performance:
“We all know that Trent has amazing quality going forward and maybe he needs to work more on his defensive ability than on his offensive prowess.
“The problem arose from the first attack. We all know that Liverpool push their full-backs at the top of the field and the midfield has the job of covering the spaces in transition.
“This was not the case against Villa and it was not addressed for the duration of the game, either. The team needs to bounce back and make sure that never happens again.
“The same can be said of Gómez. He is clearly being asked to play the offside trap, which works pretty well most of the time, but Aston Villa beat it time and time again.
“They will always judge him against his central defensive partner who is colossal, but everything that could go wrong he did, and it’s just about having the right mindset to make sure it doesn’t happen again and correcting it in the next games. “
Before Thomas added:
“After being beaten as they were, I don’t think changing players is the right thing to do.
“Liverpool demand such high standards of themselves in every game and they should be the 11 who started the game to go and fix it. Who better to do it than your local rivals?
“Adrian made a mistake and he doesn’t have Alisson’s standards, but Liverpool are not going to change the way they play because of a mistake.
“The players in front of him have a job to do and it is not easy as a goalkeeper when your team is letting it rain three, four, five shots. Klopp will stay with Adrian and I think he would do well to do so. “
