Liverpool asked to re-sign Lovren or Sakho

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has suggested the Reds should re-sign Dejan Lovren or Mamdou Sakho as their defensive crisis worsens.

With Virgil van Dijk out for the season, emergency replacement Fabinho suffered a hamstring injury last night to join the Dutchman and Joel Matip on the sideline.

With Joe Gomez as the only available left back, Nicol had an ironic solution when he spoke to ESPN, as quoted by Metro.

“I think we should try to get [Dejan] Lovren back on loan, maybe that would solve the problem, [Mamadou] Sakho isn’t going to get a game for Palace either.

“Basically, we’re sticking with Rhys Williams, who’s not even a center back. It’s back to the wall time.

“Defensively you don’t take risks, you clean your lines, you keep things simple and try to maintain good form.

“Joe Gomez is going to have to shoulder the burden of that because he’s the only recognized center-back really left. I can’t imagine Matip getting back in shape before, at least around this time next year, because he never is.

“Joe Gomez will have to grow very fast in the next few weeks.”

I wonder where he thinks Rhys Williams plays …

Or if, as my colleague Paul Gorst just suggested, you mistake him for Neco.
