Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has changed his mind about VAR

Jurgen Klopp admits that he has changed his mind about the use of VAR in football.

The Liverpool manager initially supported the technology when it was first introduced to English football at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, after nearly 18 months of being at stake in both the Premier League and the Champions League, Klopp says he no longer holds the same point of view.

The Reds coach spoke after a 1-1 draw with Midtjylland in the Champions League, where close to 100 minutes were played in Denmark after a handful of lengthy controls with video technology.

Initially, the VAR gave the hosts a penalty that was sent by Alexander Scholz to cancel the first minute of Mohamed Salah.

Scholz then had a second chalked up after lengthy consultation with the VAR before Takumi Minamino’s goal in injury time was also denied by the video replays.

“It just took too long,” Klopp said.

“I think now at the end, I mean I didn’t see it back, but it was so hard to do, it took three or four minutes and it was cold for the guys.

“It’s very difficult and I could hear people say ‘OMG he talks about it’ but it took a long time and it was very cold. So it doesn’t help.

“But in the end, I used to be one of the people who said yes, VAR is a good idea, I’m really not sure I’ll say that again to be honest. But now we have it.”

Liverpool FC essential news

The 1-1 draw means Liverpool end their Group D campaign as the winner with 13 points.

The Reds could also have a chance to rise to the top of the Premier League this weekend when they travel to Fulham on Sunday afternoon, depending on Tottenham’s result at Crystal Palace that same day.

Klopp added: “Honestly, this is not the time to think about these things.

“We played a game with a good first half and a less good second half and we got a point, 13 points is good, but Fulham is already on my mind.

“I can’t think about what happened so far, whatever position we’re together with at the top of the table.

“We think we could have had even more points, we lost fully deserved at Villa, a point at Manchester City was good, but Brighton and Everton in terms of performance we could, we should have won.

“That’s just the past. Now it’s Fulham and they expect our full approach and they will get it.”
