Jurgen Klopp revealed that Joel Matip is a doubt for Liverpool’s game against Manchester United next month.
The Cameroonian defender is expected to be out of the game for three weeks with the kidnapper’s injury he sustained during Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at home to West Brom.
Rhys Williams replaced Matip against the Baggies, while Nat Phillips was the defender chosen to start in Liverpool’s goalless draw with Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
The result leaves Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table heading into 2021 with United three points behind them in second place, but one game behind.
Although neither Klopp nor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently considering the suggestion of a title battle between the two sides, the scale of their showdown next month cannot be ignored.
United face a trio of home games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Watford before their trip to Anfield on January 17 with defender Matip now in doubt for the match.
When asked about the 29-year-old’s condition after the draw at St. James’ Park, Klopp said: “The normal for this type of injury is around three weeks.”
Liverpool’s home game against United will come exactly three weeks after Matip suffered his injury against West Brom.
