Liverpool ace Andy Robertson believes the points count required to win the Premier League will drop significantly this season.
The Reds are currently leading the way in the table, but gave Manchester United the perfect opportunity to beat them on Monday night when they lost 1-0 to Southampton.
Liverpool lost 1-0 after just one minute when Danny Ings edged out Alisson Becker from a carefully crafted free kick from Southampton and never recovered, leaving them tied on points with United after playing one more game.
Jurgen Klopp was forced to name midfielder duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as his two center-backs as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip were sidelined with injury.
And given that Liverpool are unlikely to add new center-backs during January, it appears Klopp will have to fix his squad from now until the end of the season.
The Reds have endured some tough games over the festive period, having lost points to Newcastle and West Brom before the trip to St Mary’s.
But Robertson believes there is still a path to the title for Liverpool, explaining that he believes the title will be won with a point count in the 80s rather than the 90s, as in previous years.
Liverpool secured the title last year with 99 points, having finished second with 97 the year before after Manchester City registered 98.
Speaking before the trip to the south coast to face Southampton, Robertson said: “For the last two years or even three years, and without disrespecting those clubs, but last season we would have won those games.
“If you add two points to each of those games, then the league table looks very different and we are very happy, but you know, this season is going to be unique.
“I think there are seven or eight teams, once the games have been played in hand, we are three points behind us at the top, and it will be a unique season as I said.
“I think I can comfortably say that it’s not going to be 97 or 98 points that are going to win the league this season, it will probably be in the 80s because it’s that tight and everyone is taking points away.
“We need to stay in the race, and that’s what we’ve done so far.”
