“The German federal police informed RB Leipzig today that the case described does not meet the requirements for an exception” to the travel restrictions, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
According to AFP’s sports subsidiary SID, Leipzig is now looking for an alternative location.
The Bundesliga club will host Premier League champions Liverpool in a Champions League round of 16 first leg, but the match planning has been altered by Germany’s recently updated travel restrictions.
The new rules, scheduled to last until the day after the game, prohibit travelers from countries affected by new, more contagious coronavirus variants such as Great Britain.
Although there are some exceptions for medical workers and others in key professions, the Home Office has repeatedly said that “there is no special provision for professional athletes.”
According to German media reports, UEFA regulations dictate that Leipzig must find a way to host the match or risk losing it as a 3-0 defeat.
Possible solutions include playing the match on neutral ground outside of Germany, or changing the home and away matches of the tie so that the first leg is in Liverpool.
