Barcelona and Real Sociedad meet in La Liga on Wednesday, and both clubs are undergoing a change of roles.
It is Real Sociedad that tops the table in Spain’s top flight, while Barcelona languishes in eighth place entering the league’s midweek list.
The nine-point gap between the two is a bit misleading, as Barcelona have two games in hand, but Lionel Messi & Co. risk falling further from the title picture if they can’t secure a victory at Camp. Nou.

It has been a tumultuous season for Barcelona, following a tumultuous summer in which the club was humiliated by Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and Messi made it clear that he wanted to leave. The new coach, Ronald Koeman, has not been a panacea, as the Blaugrana fell in national results against teams like Cádiz and Getafe and lost key games against Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. They earned three points over the weekend by beating Levante, 1-0, with a late goal from Messi.
Real Sociedad enters the day at 26 points with the two Madrid powers, although Atlético has two less games in both. There are indications that the dominance of the Basque club at the start of the season is waning, with three consecutive draws against teams such as Villarreal, Alavés and Eibar that translate into six lost points
Mikel Oyarzabal leads the club, and is tied for the lead in La Liga, with seven goals.
