Lionel Messi’s father and manager, Jorge Messi, has poured cold water on rumors that his son could move to Paris Saint-Germain.
The French giants were reportedly interested in securing the Argentine in a free transfer, and could have started talks as early as January as Messi’s contract expires next June.
Messi’s future is hugely uncertain due to his bitter dealings with the Catalan team this summer and the financial crisis that surrounds them.
There is great political upheaval in Barcelona after the high-profile resignation of former President Josep Bartomeu and the departure of forward Luis Suárez to Atlético de Madrid.
Messi infamously filed a burofax with Barcelona this summer expressing his desire to leave, before finally deciding to stay to avoid major legal disputes.
Moneybags Manchester City, led by former Messi’s boss Pep Guardiola, and national champion PSG have long been linked with a move if he leaves when his contract runs out in June 2021.
PSG sporting director Leonardo admitted his team would try to sign Juventus forward, and Messi’s rival, as the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Clearly, the Parisian team is eager to add a new superstar to their squad, and a big money move for Messi and a possible delightful reunion with Brazilian Neymar would certainly make sense if it were financially viable.
But Jorge Messi used Instagram to flatly deny ESPN Argentina’s report that his son could move to the French capital, saying: ‘Stop inventing! Fake news. ‘
Sportsmail previously reported that Barcelona needs to cut its prohibitively high wage spending by £ 170 million to avoid the threat of bankruptcy in January.
And after the board doesn’t agree to pay cuts with its first-team players, the board is more likely to be forced to establish pay cuts for them. The Spanish players’ union has stated that Barça stars could leave for free.
This could also mean that Messi, Barcelona’s top winner at £ 500,000 a week, could depart as a financial necessity rather than a decision on the field.
Despite Messi’s apparent desire to leave, Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman recently declared that the team is “always better” with him at the side.
Messi turned the game around on his last outing for Barcelona, grooming Antoine Griezmann and scoring twice to help his team beat Real Betis 5-2 after coming off the bench with teams tied 1-1 .
Messi has traveled back to Argentina to help his country prepare for the World Cup qualifier against Paraguay tomorrow.
Argentina have won two matches out of two so far, but are second in the group behind Brazil on goal difference, and will look to extend their perfect record.
