Lionel Messi admitted that “everything will be strange” when LaLiga resumes after the coronavirus pandemic, but insisted that he and his Barcelona teammates will benefit from the forced rest.
The Barcelona captain has not played since scoring a late winner against Real Sociedad on March 7, with Spanish football suspended in the middle of the outbreak, leaving his side of the table by two points with nine games to play.
Messi also offered his thoughts on how football could be safely resumed and which players he believes could improve the Barcelona team this summer.
Messi told Sport and Mundo Deportivo: ‘This break may end up benefiting us, but we are going to see if the competitions can start and there we will leave doubts, because we will check the level we have or can reach when I start.’
Messi also spoke about how he kept fit while isolating himself at home with his family in Catalonia and is enjoying time with his family.
He added: ‘Physically I feel very good. These days I was training at home and I think it helped me stay in shape. The confinement is very difficult, but with the children and with Antonela everything becomes moments that I try to enjoy all together. ”
On the measures taken by the authorities and the clubs to combat the coronavirus, Messi added: “ The risk of contagion is everywhere, when you leave the house, the risk is already there, therefore, I think you do not have to think about it a lot because if he can’t make you want to go nowhere. But we also understand that it is essential to comply with protocols and take maximum preventive measures.
“Returning to training is a first step, but we must not trust ourselves and we must continue to take all necessary precautions and assume that we have to start playing when they arrive, but behind closed doors.”
Barcelona is also making moves in the transfer market as they aim to bolster their squad, with Messi’s compatriot Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan emerging as a key target.
Messi said: ‘I am not sure if there were or are negotiations at the moment for him, I have no idea. I think I already mentioned it, that Lautaro is an impressive striker, especially because I think he is a very complete point: he is strong, he dribbles well, he has a goal, he knows how to protect the ball … But hey, we will have to see what happens finally with him and with other names.
With Barcelona in pole position to retain their LaLiga crown under new boss Quique Setien, Messi is still confident that he can add even more cutlery to his extensive collection.
He said: ‘I never doubted the team we have and I have no doubt that you can win all that is left, but not by playing the way we were playing. Now everyone has their opinion and everyone is very respectable.
‘Mine is that it is based on the fact that I was lucky to play the Champions League every year and I know that it is not possible to win by playing as we have been playing. Perhaps Setien misinterpreted it.
‘I am personally looking forward to the competitions. We know that everything will be strange, without people on the court and with the theme of the concentrations that we really would not like to have to separate from our families. You have to see how it looks. ‘
