Lionel Messi doubts that Barcelona can recover old glories and has admitted that things are “very, very bad” at the Catalan giants.
The Barça icon almost retired from his only professional club last summer, and Manchester City believed they could sign him with a free transfer due to a clause in his Camp Nou contract.
However, that clause expired, and the legal fight that ensued could not get Messi to get the result he wanted, as he sought to turn his back on Catalonia.
That contract will expire at the end of this current season, and there is currently no indication that Messi will sign a new contract.
In an extensive interview with the Spanish television channel La Sexta, the Argentine expressed his love for the club saying: “Barça is my life, I am in love with the club. And the city, my children were born here.”
He also opened up to the struggles he faced over the summer, admitting that the Burofax, a faxed legal document he sent demanding a transfer, had created a difficult environment for him.
“These days I feel good,” he continued.
“I had a really bad time last summer with Burofax and all that, and before.
“But now I feel good, excited to fight for everything in front of us. But the club is going through a difficult time, the team too, everything at Barça is complicated.”
Currently, Barça is fifth in La Liga, eight points behind the league leaders Atlético de Madrid, and Messi admits there are “bad” problems at the club.
“I know that things at Barça are very, very bad,” he said.
“It will be difficult to get back to where we were.”
