Lionel Messi is not expected to attend Barcelona’s pre-season medical tests on Sunday as he tries to force a departure from the club.
It was widely reported on Saturday that the Argentine forward informed Barcelona that he will not appear for the team’s mandatory coronavirus tests.
He also plans to skip the start of preseason training on Monday.
According to the Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol, Barcelona responded to Messi by reminding him that he still has a contract with the Camp Nou and must attend Sunday’s tests at his training ground at the Ciutat Esportiva.
It really looks like things are about to get ugly.
Messi believes he is free to leave Barcelona this summer after activating a clause in his contract, but the Spanish giants point out that the June 10 deadline for this clause has passed.
They expect you to attend on Sunday and could impose penalties if you don’t.
Sport has now detailed the penalties Messi could receive if he refuses to appear. They claim that any sanction for missing Sunday’s training sessions would be classified as minor, and may not even be sanctioned at all because he informed Barcelona of his intention to leave “as of August 30”.
However, things would improve if he did not attend on Sunday and Monday.
Severe penalties could be imposed for “the first and second non-attendance, without just cause, when not related to a match.”
In this case, Barcelona could suspend the 33-year-old without pay for between 2 and 10 days. You could be fined up to 7% of your monthly salary, depending on the severity of the violation.
Here is the full breakdown of the possible penalties:
Salaries less than or equal to € 100,000 per month
- Minimum: from 4.01% to 5% of the monthly salary.
- Medium: from 5.01% to 6% of the monthly salary.
- Maximum: 6.01% to 7% of the monthly salary.
Salaries over € 100,000 per month
The above percentages for the initial € 100,000 still hold. Then the following costs are added:
- Minimum: from 1.33% of the excess monthly salary.
- Medium: 1.34% to 2.66% of excess monthly salary.
- Maximum: 2.67% to 4% of the excess monthly salary.
The fines would be even more severe if Messi missed Tuesday’s session.
The rules establish: “The third and fourth successive absences to attend work, without just cause, would incur a severe penalty.”
Messi could be suspended and lose between 10 and 30 days of pay.
Salaries less than or equal to € 100,000 per month
- Minimum: from 7.01% to 13% of the monthly salary.
- Medium: from 13.01% to 19% of the monthly salary.
- Maximum: from 19.01% to 25% of the monthly salary.
Salaries over € 100,000 per month
As before, the above percentages of the initial € 100,000 still apply. The following are added:
- Minimum: from 3.33% of the monthly surplus.
- Medium: 3.34% to 6.66% of the excess monthly salary.
- Maximum: 6.67% to 10% of the excess monthly salary.
According to Football Leaks, Messi makes £ 988,000 per week in Barcelona. Then it would be at the top level of the fine structure.
That means that with an approximate monthly salary of £ 4.2 million, Messi could be fined more than £ 1 million. Wow.
