Lionel Messi: 10 of the Barça star’s records that may never be broken after beating Pelé

[ad_1]

Lionel Messi solidified his status as arguably the greatest footballer of all time this week.

The Barcelona superstar found the net during the 3-0 win over Real Valladolid on Tuesday night, finishing deliciously after an assist from Pedri and making history in the process.

He scored Messi’s 644 goal in iconic Barcelona colors, meaning no player has scored more times for the same club in football history.

Messi makes history

Aha, that’s right, Messi set the mind-blowing record by surpassing the 643 goals that Pelé scored during his stint at Santos, who had been alone for almost half a century.

It’s the latest reminder that while this hasn’t been an easy year for Messi, the Argentine is just a few games away from showing people why he’s one of the greatest.

And when the sad day comes when Messi hangs up his boots and we no longer have the visual proof of seeing his brilliance live, it is records like these that will fight his case in the GOAT debate.

Messi’s records

Plus, it’s hard to imagine a world where Messi’s latest feat will possibly be brought down, especially considering how increasingly rare it is becoming for players to be loyal to a club.

But keep that thought for a second because, here at GIVEMESPORT, we wanted to find out if any other of Messi’s stats deserve the status of almost certainly unbreakable.

Well, it’s fair to say the answer is a resounding ‘yes,’ so buckle up and enjoy at least ten of Messi’s amazing accomplishments that we can’t imagine will ever be surpassed:

1. Most consecutive Golden Balls

We are inclined to think that Messi’s six Ballon d’Or total will remain unbeatable, but we are absolutely confident that the four consecutive awards he won between 2009 and 2012 will be unmatched.

2. Most goals in La Liga history

With 450 goals barely believed in 498 games, we think it’s almost impossible for anyone to beat this tally when Cristiano Ronaldo is by almost 150 goals in second place.

3. Most goals in a Champions League knockout match

Do you see a world where someone scores a double hat-trick in the knockout rounds of the main European competition? Neither have I, so I think Messi’s streak of five against Bayer Leverkusen is pretty sure.

4. Most goals in a single La Liga season

Ronaldo might have come within a few strokes of this feat twice, but considering he’s equally bizarre in terms of football greatness, we believe Messi’s 50 goals from 2011/12 will stand the test of time.

5. Most goals in a calendar year

Ah, the one that everyone talks about and with good reason. Messi might as well be in the Guinness Book of World Records in permanent ink because his mind-blowing 91 hits from 2012 are surely as safe as houses.

6. The longest scoring streak in history

This feat, however, is nowhere near the airtime he deserves because Messi’s scandalous 21-goal streak in La Liga is five times above the second-highest in Gerd Muller’s history.

7. Most goals for a single club

Ah yes, the album that brings us here. For this invincible record to even be threatened, you would need one of the greatest footballers of all time to also be one of the most loyal, and we can’t see that happen.

8. 11 consecutive finals among the top three in the Ballon d’Or

Yeah how crazy is this? Such was Messi’s dominance that he was voted among the top three players in the world each year between 2007 and 2017, and Ronaldo’s nine-year streak is the most threatened.

9. More European Golden Boot titles

Again, excuse us for comparing ourselves to Ronaldo again, but if the legendary Portuguese can’t come within two trophies of Messi’s incredible total of six, then frankly there’s no hope for anyone.

10. More goals in the history of El Clásico

Yes, things could have dried up for Messi at El Clásico for the past two years, but it doesn’t make his record of 26 goals, which no one has been within seven goals, any less impregnable.

Treasure the greatness of Messi

It’s mind-boggling to think that Messi has racked up even more incredible records that didn’t make the cut, but we’re inclined to think that these ten have the best chance of standing the test of time.

Furthermore, whether you believe or not that Messi is the greatest player in history, you cannot deny that he has left an indelible impact on the sport that will remain documented in the record books for decades to come.

However, while those records will undoubtedly be praise, we are truly the lucky ones to have had the opportunity to see Messi with our two eyes and that, too, simply cannot be beat.
