The Liga MX giant, Chivas, expelled midfielder Dieter Villalpando from the club after being accused of committing a crime of sexual abuse against a woman at a party, while Eduardo “La Chofis” López, José Juan “Gallito” Vázquez and Alexis Peña are suspended from the club for their alleged participation.
The alleged event occurred last month, when Villalpando’s lawyer indicated in interviews with different media that his client is the victim of an extortion attempt.
In a document obtained by René Tovar and Alfredo Olivarez of ESPN, Villalpando submitted a written statement to authorities declaring his innocence of the accusation.
“None of the four players will play for Chivas again,” the club’s sporting director Ricardo Peláez said in a video statement on Wednesday. “The Chivas are damaging their own sporting interests, but with the idea of building a team with values. From now on, there will be zero tolerance, no one can wear the Chivas jersey just because they play football well.”
Villalpando was “permanently separated” from Chivas, while Peña, López and Vázquez have been marginalized and may be transferred, according to Peláez. Apart from Peña, 24, all three have played several seasons in Mexico’s top division, and Vázquez, 32, won four league titles and participated with Mexico in the 2014 World Cup.
The incident is Chivas’ latest indiscipline in 2020, with Uriel Antuna, Alexis Vega, López and Cristian Calderón making headlines this year for off-the-field incidents, although the latter has caused the club to adopt a hard-line stance.
“It is more than a simple indiscipline; all the attention tarnishes the name of our family and institution,” said the club’s general manager, Amaury Vergara, in the same statement. “It is important to mention that the Omnilife-Chivas group condemns any act of violence against women.”
Vergara began by stating that his father, Jorge, bought the club – which plays only with Mexico’s nationals – with the idea of placing players who inspire the youth of Mexico, something that the latest incident discredits.
“There will be zero tolerance,” Vergara added. We have taken the determination to put an end to indiscipline and any act that goes against the values and tradition of our club ”.
Chivas has 40 million fans in North America and is currently in eighth position in the Liga MX table, with one round of the regular season remaining in the 2020 Guard1anes tournament.
