The newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires of the Libyan Embassy, Mr. Mohamed MO Melad, has presented his letter of appointment to Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra.
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey congratulated the Charge d’Affaires on his appointment and assured him of her support during his tour of duty in Ghana.
He acknowledged with satisfaction the cordial relations between Ghana and Libya, since the 1980s; fostered cooperation through the African Union (AU) and the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) on issues of common interest to the two countries and through the Ghana-Libyan Holding Company (GHALCO), operators of the chain Golden Tulip of hotels in Ghana.
He said that the reopening of the Ghana Embassy in Libya in March 2020 was a further testament to Ghana’s commitment to strengthening existing ties of friendship, as well as an opportunity to expand the commercial interests of the two countries by exploiting the potentials of the market on both sides. and provide visas and related consular services.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration also mentioned the commitment of the Government of Ghana to consolidate existing ties of friendship and expand the scope of economic and technical cooperation between the two countries.
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey referred to the fact that this year marked the 10th anniversary of the Libyan uprising and praised the Libyan government for its prudent measures to address the problem of instability in the country.
He expressed the hope that the new Transitional Government will maintain its stated commitment to organizing general elections for a peaceful and orderly transfer of power by the end of 2021.
The Minister noted with concern the complexity of the security situation in the Maghreb region and expressed the hope that the new government will make great efforts to carry out the disarmament, demobilization and comprehensive reintegration of all combatants in accordance with the security objectives. sector reforms and national security.
He assured Mr. Melad of Ghana’s readiness and willingness to support Libya and the efforts of the international community to restore peace and order in Libya, and emphasized that Ghana appreciated its fraternal relations with Libya and would always, firmly assist in the return of the country to its former glorious state in the spirit of pan-Africanism.
The minister said that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, Ghana and Libya share many things in common, such as the integration of Africa and the strengthening of the continental body in the pursuit of common socio-economic goals.
He expressed Ghana’s desire to draw on Libya’s rich experience in the oil and gas industry by adopting its best practices to protect water bodies and the environment in the country.
Ms Ayorkor Botchwey said that the Permanent Joint Ghana-Libya Cooperation Commission (PJCC) had been on hold since it was last held in Sirte and Tripoli in May 2010 and regretted that most of the signed agreements have not been implemented. effectively over the years. negatively impacting the benefits desired by both countries, and begged him to pursue the issue with his directors in Tripoli.
He reiterated the need for the two countries to further deepen the already cordial bilateral relations between the two countries and peoples.
