Speaker of Parliament Alban SK Bagbin has categorically stated that while Ghana will not enact any laws that infringe on people’s rights, the country will ensure that it passes laws that will protect Ghanaian values, traditions, culture, religion and principles. .

Bagbin described LGBTQI + as an abomination that will never be accepted in Ghana.

In his remarks, High Commissioner Gregory Andrews, known for his keen interest in Ghanaian food and culture, spoke about the rich Ghanaian culture he has enjoyed since arriving in Ghana and said that he has had a positive image in his family. .

“We believe that to protect human rights sometimes our culture needs to adapt and that does not mean being a different culture, it means accepting people for who they are, especially when they are not causing harm to anyone else.”

“That is why on LGBTQ + issues, Australia will really encourage the Parliament of Ghana not to pass laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ + community or take away their rights or make it illegal for people to defend their Human Rights.”

In response, Mr. Alban Bagbin said: “Our laws abhor any form of discrimination. We also have the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to guide us in everything we do… and so on the LGBTQI + issue we definitely already have a legal framework within which to work. We will not legislate to violate people’s Human Rights, but we will legislate to ensure that culture and traditions are not violated.

“This is something that we see as an abomination, it is something that we abhor and therefore, we will continue to go according to our culture.”

Members of Parliament at the meeting praised the Commissioner for his passion for climate change and how Australia has supported small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) amid the pandemic.

The High Commissioner was urged to complete the sports facilities Australia promised to Ghana and also to enhance the Youth Ambassador Project where 18-30 year olds can travel to Australia for educational purposes.
