Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller have expressed their support for Leroy Sane after the winger was substituted and later retired during Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern won 2-1, with Lewandowski scoring both of his team’s goals, including a late winner, but much of the post-match discussion centered on Sane.
After entering the fray in the 32nd minute as a replacement for the injured Kingsley Coman, Sane was retired in the 68th minute, and young Jamal Musiala entered.
Bayern manager Hansi Flick explained after the game that Sane was the only candidate to be eliminated, noting that the 24-year-old was not being punished.
As reported by Goal, Flick said: ‘It was not a punishment. He had to make a replacement, and the options were Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, or Leroy.
‘Thomas is indispensable to our system, Serge really got into the game in the second half. So I had to subdue Leroy.
Ultimately, it is about the success of the team over the individuals. We support Leroy in every way possible. ‘
Lewandowski emphasized that Sane, who has scored five goals and provided three assists in 16 games since arriving from Manchester City, should have time to settle at Bayern.
“He needs a little time,” Lewandowski said. I am sure that next year it will show its quality. Fingers crossed for him, he’s a great guy.
“He himself knows that he can benefit from a short break and we will need it in the future.”
Muller, for his part, described Sane as a “first-rate player” and expressed his confidence that he will soon be able to make a big impact at Bayern.
“Hansi must have had his reasons,” Muller said.
“Personally, I really enjoy playing with Leroy and I think we had more offensive moves on the right when he came in.
I don’t think it will be that long until we start talking about Leroy in a different way. It is very close to breaking through.
‘You shouldn’t get frustrated by this, but motivate yourself. It doesn’t make it easier for us to be struggling a bit as a team right now.
“The guy is really a great player, he was injured for a long time. He also wants more of himself.
‘The team will help him. I am confident and totally believe in it. He has qualities that, hopefully, he will show us in the first game of the new year ”.
Bayern’s victory means they are two points ahead of Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga.
They don’t play in the league again until January 3, when they host Mainz.
