Lazio’s Ciro Immobile scored against his former club Borussia Dortmund in a 3-1 home win marking his return to the Champions League group stage after a 13-year absence on Tuesday.
His second goal was credited as an own goal by goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, while substitute Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro scored the third as the Italians ignored his poor form in the new Serie A season for ensure a winning start to your Group F campaign.
Norwegian Dortmund striker Erling Haaland maintained his prolific Champions League scoring form with a second-half goal to make it 2-1, but that would be the German club’s only consolation.
Immobile, who played in the Bundesliga for Dortmund in the 2014-15 season, led Lazio to an early lead after the forced possession of new Dortmund fullback Thomas Meunier.
It allowed Joaquín Correa to steal a pass from Immobile, who scored from close range in the sixth minute.
It was the fifth Champions League goal for the 30-year-old Italian international, the previous four efforts being marked in Dortmund colors.
Lazio’s lead was doubled in the 23rd minute when Luiz Felipe, on his return from injury, attacked a corner and received a head touch, directing the ball into the goal that hit Hitz’s face on entering.
Subsequently, UEFA changed the credit for the Brazilian’s goal for an own goal.
Dortmund had few opportunities to force a chance in the first half, but after the break they looked much more offensive as Haaland started to make his way through the home defense and looked dangerous.
Jude Bellingham became the youngest English player to play in the Champions League, but ended up disappointed.
Bellingham, at 17 years and 113 days, broke the record held by Phil Foden of Manchester City.
Haaland finally scored a goal in the 71st minute with a powerful left-footed shot from a direct pass from teenage American substitute Gio Reyna.
Haaland now has 11 goals in nine appearances in the competition.
But just as Dortmund came out in search of parity, a quick counterattack saw Immobile prepare substitute Akpa-Akpro to restore Lazio’s two-goal lead five minutes after the visitors goal.
Lazio’s victory contrasts with their national form, where they have accumulated just one point in their last three Serie A outings.
Earlier Tuesday, Club Brugge of Belgium scored a winning goal in injury time to beat Zenit St. Petersburg 2-1 in Russia in their first group match.
Next week, Lazio play at Club Brugge, while Dortmund host Zenit.
