– Prospective students from the Accra city campus have come together to register

– These students ignored the social distancing protocol

– This is happening amid an increase in Covid-19 cases in Ghana

Photos from the Accra city campus of the University of Ghana show students gathered to register for the 2021/2022 academic year.

What is troubling about these images is how these students have been allowed to huddle together and not socially drift away at a time when Ghana’s COVID-19 cases are on the rise.

Despite the majority of these students wearing face masks, authorities appear to have left caution to the wind to ensure these students are on a structured protocol of will amid the Coronavirus.

Covid-19 Cases Rise In Ghana, Doctors Tell Ghanaians “Your Health Is In Your Hands”

The government is under immense pressure to carry out a second blockade. The coronavirus positivity rate in Ghana continues to rise. The Ghana Medical Association has warned that hospitals and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases.

As of January 11, the number of confirmed active cases, as reported from the Ministry of Health website, is 1,404.

Figures from the Ministry of Health show an increase in daily figures since December; This has been related to indiscipline, non-compliance with covid-19 protocols and elections.

The Ghana Medical Association has already warned the public that “your health is in your own hands” and hospitals are overloaded to cope with the rise of the virus.

One concern has been the cost of testing, as well as the lack of contact tracing by the Health Ministry. These problems, according to the GMA, have led to an increase in Covid cases.

Even as the government scrambles to reduce the spread of the virus, suspicions of a Covid-19 data suppression continue to mount. Journalists and some medical professionals doubt the figures that the Ministry of Health is chipping, arguing that (the figures) are in stark contrast to reality in various medical facilities.

Meanwhile, President Akufo Addo has ensured Ghana’s readiness to implement a mass vaccination program against Covid-19. Speaking in his recent Covid-19 speech, the president revealed that procurement processes are well advanced to secure millions of vaccine doses by 2021.

This assurance comes as Ghana’s neighbor Nigeria has registered a new case of the Covid-19 variant that global scientists fear is more contagious than the Covid-19 we know of.

Although Ghana has outlined strategic interventions to control the spread of the coronavirus, enforcement has been very weak across the country. The Ghana Medical Association has condemned what it described as “the indiscipline of Ghanaians to adhere to security protocols against Covid.”

Many Ghanaians go about their business without covering their faces. The sale and purchase of hand sanitizers has also fallen as if the virus had been completely defeated in the Subregion.

Cases continue to be registered, especially in Accra. A recent graphical presentation of the spread of the virus shows a peak in the first and second weeks of December.
