The Central Regional Land Directorate Commission must issue the final decision on an alleged destruction of property on land in New Winneba to allow the Police to initiate the prosecution or otherwise of the suspects.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kojo Oppong – Agyekum, Effutu Municipal Officer of the Department of Criminal Investigation (CID), who revealed this to the media, said police were awaiting the final verdict from the Land Commission to determine the true owner of the land.
He said Eric Siripi, a businessman, reported to police in Winneba that some suspects that the guards had destroyed walls, pillars and other structures on his legally acquired land.
The Crime Officer said the Ghanaian Parliament had enacted a law that prohibited any person or group of people from moving to land to cause damage to private property.
ASP Oppong-Agyekum said the police relied on that and launched investigations into the matter, but Kofi Hanson, Executive Director (CEO) of Queens and Kings Bar and Restaurant in Winneba also claimed ownership of the same land.
The Effutu Crime Officer said the police referred the matter to the Central Regional Land Commission, which is the only government entity to determine the owner of the land.
ASP Oppong-Agyekum said that the dispute between Eric Siripi and Kofi Hanson could be amicably resolved only by the Land Commission and not by security agencies, which could only deal with property damage.
He could also prosecute those guilty of possessing fraudulent documents in a court of law.
