Frank Lampard has praised Tammy Abraham’s reaction to the influx of new Chelsea recruits.

Abraham scored his first goal in eight games as the Blues swept 10-man Rennes 3-0 in Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have disbursed £ 220 million this summer to renew Chief Lampard’s team, with German international Timo Werner reinforcing the attack line.

Werner’s two penalties brought his Chelsea tally to seven goals in 11 games since his £ 53 million transfer from RB Leipzig when Lampard’s men sealed a second Group E win in three games.

Werner’s arrival has obviously stiffened the competition for Abraham, but Lampard has revealed his delight at the 23-year-old English forward’s response.

“I am very happy, I have had numerous conversations with Tammy because I have a good relationship with him,” said Lampard.

“When we brought in players in attacking areas, we brought in players who are versatile by nature, Timo playing on the left, for example. The qualities that Tammy can bring to the team never escape me.

‘I know what he can bring when he’s at his best. In his last two games, today and against Burnley, we saw him at his best.

“ He got his goal and he deserves it in terms of stretching teams, delaying them, unleashing our press, jumping.

‘I’m not content to just jump five yards, but get the team onto the field as the first man to get off the ball. Those things are very important to me. Sometimes it’s about the invisible.

“His goal was the culmination of his performances in the last two games.”

Werner chose to resign at the end of the Leipzig Champions League campaign after the football restart, to join Chelsea and prepare for the new campaign.

The 24-year-old has started racing in the Blues, leaving Lampard particularly satisfied, especially given the lack of preseason due to the impact of the pandemic.

“That he could come to train with us early was a great advantage for us; that he could come and adapt to life, to the training ground, how we train, relate to the players, “said Lampard.

“We haven’t had a preseason, so we have benefited from him and Hakim (Ziyech) having that period with us. We see that Timo is in shape, quickly adapting to the rigors of the Premier League, working on our team and how we want to play.

‘It was an advantage, certainly an advantage that he could train. It has been easy for me to handle. Works well. I left him on the field today because I felt he had the stamina to play 90 minutes. I’m very happy with him. ‘
