Five players in Spain’s two main divisions have tested positive for Covid-19 since the clubs began evaluating players and staff members last week, and Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro confirmed himself as one of the cases.
A La Liga statement said the players would stay home where they would continue to train individually before being reassessed “over the next few days” to determine if they can return to their club’s training ground.
Many clubs have returned to individual training as part of the second leg of the La Liga four-phase protocol to resume the season after the game stopped in early March.
The League, which last week said it expected to play matchless games next month, said detecting positive cases was vital to its program to return to activity.
“One of the objectives of these tests was to detect asymptomatic cases. That way, we guarantee everyone’s safety when we return to work and comply with safety standards in the workplace, “the statement said.
“The League has warned all participants in the training sessions not to relax the recommended safety measures at the facility or in their homes to ensure that the number of infections remains low.”
The statement added that the league would not release the names of infected players due to data protection laws, but Remiro said Saturday that he was one of the players who tested positive.
“Thank you so much for the messages of support, I got a negative result in the PCR test and all I have are antibody residues that will disappear soon and other antibodies will appear soon telling me that I am cured,” he wrote on Twitter. “I will train again soon but for now I will have to keep training hard on the indoor bike.”
