La Liga has responded to Lionel Messi’s wish to leave Barcelona and to recent reports on the saga.
Cadena SER claimed on Saturday that Messi’s 700 million euro buyout clause expired at the end of last season and is no longer valid.
However, La Liga has announced that Messi remains under contract and his release clause remains active.
“In relation to the different interpretations (some of them contradictory to each other) published in recent days in different media, related to the contractual situation of the player Lionel Andrés Messi with FC Barcelona, La Liga considers it convenient to clarify that, once the player’s contract with his club:
“The contract is currently in force and has a ‘termination clause’ applicable in the event that Lionel Andrés Messi decides to urge the early unilateral termination of the June 26 contract, which regulates the special employment relationship of athletes professionals.
“In compliance with the applicable regulations, and following the corresponding procedure in these cases, the League will not carry out the prior visa procedure for the player to be removed from the federation if he has not previously paid the amount of said clause.”

Messi did not attend the PCR tests on Sunday in Barcelona, which means he cannot start preseason training with the club on Monday. Barcelona have yet to respond to the most recent events, but have so far been adamant that they will not sell their captain.
