Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has confirmed that the New Patriotic Party (PNP) has entered into a pledge with the fired Fomena deputy Andrews Amoako Asiamah to join the PNP side of the chamber in the next parliament.

In an interview with Joseph Opoku Gakapo of JoyNews, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs indicated that the opposition Democratic National Congress has also taken steps to put him on his side.

According to him, although both parties are committing to Amoako, the final decision would be his (the lawyer Asiamah) to decide which side he would like in the next parliament.

“He will decide. [Currently] there is a commitment on both sides [both NPP and NDC] to put him on his side, ”he said.

Mensah Bonsu also dismissed concerns raised that there will be a hung parliament starting next year, insisting that there will always be a clear majority.

“We have an odd number in our parliament, so there will never be a hung parliament. There will always be a majority. There are only two caucuses in the House; Caucus of majority and minority.

“According to the structure of our parliament, an independent parliamentarian will be required to elect one side of the caucus. So there cannot be a hanging Parliament in Ghana ”, he emphasized.

Lawyer Amoako Asiamah’s team has already indicated that it is not opposed to meeting with the PNP leadership to chart a new course with the Party after its removal from the party before the elections.

Special help to the elected deputy, Seth Oduro has said that the team has nothing against President Akufo-Addo and the PNP party, however, considering how lawyer Asiamah was expelled from the party, the responsibility falls on the Party to make the first move.

Currently, the fired Fomena deputy has the weight of tipping the balance in favor of either of the 2 main political parties, as the seats are essentially evenly distributed between the PNP and the NDC in parliament.

From the results of the EC for the parliamentary elections, NPP currently has 137 seats and NDC with 136 in the next Parliament with a total of 275 seats. Sene West, however, remains pending after a court order.

Asiamah is the only independent candidate in the next Parliament.
