Residents of Whindo in the western region’s Kwesimintim constituency blocked roads on Monday morning to prevent Election Commission officials from evaluating polling stations while protesting poor road conditions.

An eyewitness, Emmanuel Afful, reporting from the constituency stated that residents in July this year warned that they will not allow voting in the constituency to continue if their roads are not repaired.

Afful reports that the timely arrival of military and police personnel managed to disperse the crowd, allowing EC officials to move to the electoral district.

He adds that residents began running for their lives after seeing heavily armed military and police personnel.

Ghanaians head to the polls today, Monday, December 7, 2020, to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians.

More than 17 million voters are expected to participate in the exercise. The figure is 2 million more than the number of voters who voted in the previous 2016 elections.

The electoral commission has said that more than 33,000 polling stations have been dedicated for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The race is mainly between current NPP President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former NDC leader John Dramani Mahama. Ten other presidential candidates compete at the polls.

Electoral material has been sent to the various voting centers.

The Election Commission says it aims to declare the results within 24 hours.
