Former Black Stars boss has had his say on the way forward in the quest for the restoration of Porcupine Warriors

Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah believes in Asante Kotoko’s dreams of becoming short-term continental champions, but believes that some conditions must be met first.

Two-time Caf Champions League champions, the Porcupine Warriors have set their sights on regaining their glory days after creating a new leadership.

New Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nana Yaw Amponsah has stated that the club aims to win the continental elite interclub championship and aims to play in the FIFA Club World Cup for the first historic time.

“Everyone has to play their role very well for Kotoko to regain her lost glories, but the fans have the most important role to play. They put pressure on the coaches and management to get results,” said Appiah, who represented Kotoko during his days as a player, to Kumasi FM.

“Everyone needs to be patient as we look for ways to keep our players for at least two or three years and how the technical team and management will function effectively.

“If all these things turn out very well and the fans have the patience for the technical team to work on the team, the goal of winning trophies on the continent in the next two or three years will automatically materialize.

“We can’t just sign players, bring them together and dream of winning trophies because we are Kotoko.”

Kotoko won her first Champions League title in 1970 when she beat the Congolese team TP Mazembe in the final. The Porcupine Warriors repeated the feat in 1983, featuring the Egyptian team Al Ahly at the climax.

Kotoko’s closest attempt to win a continental title came at the 2004 Caf Confederation Cup, where they succumbed to country rivals Hearts of Oak in a final penalty shootout.

Maxwell Konadu’s group, which was eliminated in the first round of the 2019-20 Champions League, will represent Ghana in the competition again next season.

On the national scene, the Kumasi-based team remains the most successful club in Ghana’s Premier League history, having won the cup 23 times.

However, his last title came six years ago in 2014.

Kotoko has also secured the Ghana FA Cup nine times and the Super Cup three times.
