The Kwahu Traditional Council says the government should not use the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse for its inability to build the Kwahu Abene Highway.
According to the Chiefs, they were assured by President Akufo Addo in 2020 that the funds for the construction of the highway had been secured, so Covid-19 cannot be a prudent justification for the delay in the construction of the highway.
“The president told us that the funds for the construction of the Abene highway had been secured, so the Covid-19 pandemic is not to blame. The money was there before the Covid-19 pandemic was registered in Ghana. ” The Krontihene of Kwahu Abene – Nana Simpeh Owiredu III said during a courtesy visit to Kwahu the Traditional Council of the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong.
The Chiefs also reminded President Akufo Addo of his promise in the 2016 election to build a bridge over the Afram River to facilitate the movement of agricultural products and services in the Afram Plains North and South.
The regional minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, proceeded to mow 27.5 km of the Kwahu Bepong to Ntomem road awarded to the IB Magida company to complete the first phase in 12 months.
Kwahu Ntomen is an important agricultural community in the area. The road when completed will help facilitate the transport of agricultural products from the community.
The regional minister also inspected a bridge being built in Odweanoma.
The minister’s visit came just days after the traditional Kwahu council warned them to demonstrate on the area’s deplorable roads.
Demonstration
The leaders of Kwahu, in the eastern region, warned the government of an imminent demonstration due to the poor roads and underdevelopment in the area.
The Chiefs say they will lead their subjects to hold a mass protest if their roads are not repaired and some basic social services such as water are not provided.
Speaking on Nkawkaw-based Agoo FM on Thursday March 18, 2021, Akyeamehene from the traditional Kwahu area, Nana Asiedu Kwarbeng IV, said that Kwahu has been neglected for too long by governments, exacerbating socio-economic disparities and the poverty among the population.
The Chief lamented that the traditional Kwahu area is one of the country’s agricultural powers, yet many of its roads are deplorable and weaken the transport of tons of agricultural products from various communities.
He cited the roads from Kwahu Abetifi to Abene to Dwerebease and from Ekye to Tease to Donkorkrom as some of the main roads in the area, but in deplorable condition.
President Akufo-Addo came to promise us about our roads. Very sweet and reassuring words that our roads were to be allotted to specially build the road from Abetifi to Abene to Dwerebease. The president promised to build it before Easter, but less than a month before Easter, nothing happens along the way. It has deteriorated quite a bit. The road from Abene to Dwerebease, which is a major farming community, will soon become immovable as we enter the rainy season. ”
“They brought a bulldozer on the Yaw Tenkorang road before the elections, but the machine left the road after the elections. It’s pathetic how they treat us at Kwahu. As soon as we start talking about some of these things, they call us by nicknames. ”
Nana Asiedu Kwarbeng IV, lamented that “No government has helped Kwahus. What do we gain from voting in each election? We are not happy with the way the government is treating us, especially our roads. The government will hear from us soon. We will prove it. Omanhene himself will lead his subjects ”
