Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, Kumasi Metropolitan Executive Director, has received the ‘Tourism Personality of the Year’ award for his involvement in the development and growth of the sector.
Their support of the sector, according to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), had helped increase knowledge and awareness of the potential of tourism in Ghana’s oldest and second-largest city.
“We present you this honorary award for your outstanding contribution to tourism promotion for the year 2019,” said a mention given to the mayor.
This was at the GTA ‘Ashanti Regional Tourism Awards 2019’ organized in Rattray Park, Kumasi, and Mr. Assibey-Antwi, for his award, also received a plaque and certificate of excellence.
Nana Yaw Owusu, Mpaboahene, representing the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presented her with the awards in the colorful ceremony.
The program featured more than 20 individuals, corporate organizations and key players in the tourism industry who received awards for their respective contributions to the growth of the sector.
They were awarded with certificates of excellence, mentions and plaques.
The MCE, in an attempt to promote ecotourism, implemented programs such as ‘Keep Kumasi Clean and Green’, an initiative that witnessed the growth of more than 72,000 trees of various species recently.
The idea is to restore Kumasi to its status as the ‘Garden City of West Africa’, in order to beautify the city, while presenting it as the tourist destination for international tourists visiting the country.
Currently, the MCE heads the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to attract investors for the development of heritage and cultural tourism, for which the city is well known. The plan is to work with the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asante monarchy, to develop the many museums around the ancient city to appreciable standards.
This is part of a grand KMA agenda to use tourism as a job creation avenue to generate wealth for people.
He had already helped improve the facilities at Rattray Park, a state-of-the-art recreational facility, to drive tourism-related events in the Metropolis.
Nana Yaw Owusu, who chaired the occasion, commended him and all the recipients for their selfless and unwavering support for the growth of tourism.
He urged them to work harder in their various roles to take advantage of the Metropolis’ tourism potential.
Mr. Akwasi Agyemang, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GTA, in a message delivered on his behalf, thanked key industry players for remaining determined towards the cause of tourism despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
He recommended that they take advantage of the stimulus packages that the government was giving to protect stakeholders and strengthen them to absorb the impacts of the pandemic.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on the sidelines of the program, advocated for a joint effort of all stakeholders for tourism development.
