Simon Osei-Mensah, Ashanti’s regional minister, has said that ongoing expansion works at Kumasi airport are expected to reach unprecedented international standards.

According to him, steps are being taken to turn Kumasi Airport into a world-class air transport hub.

The development comes after the government allocated US $ 300 million to implement all the airport expansion works.

Providing updates to the Government’s Weekly Nation Building Updates on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, in Accra, Simon Osei-Mensah said that expansion works at Kumasi Airport will be completed by the second quarter of 2021.

“We are expanding the runway by an additional 230 meters and it can take Boeing 737-800 and that is what we call an international airport. So when I check-in in Kumasi, I will not stop in Accra but will fly directly to the UK. That is what we are going to see later in the middle of next year ”, explained the minister.

Meanwhile, the completion of the Kumasi airport will make it the second international airport in the country after the main Kotoka international airport.

The entire expansion project involves the extension of the runway from 1981m to 2300m to house aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800 series, the construction of a new world-class terminal, the construction of additional platforms and other ancillary works.
