The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly warned the general public against consuming fish that were washed up on the shores of some beaches in Accra on Friday, April 2.

Speaking to JoyNews, the municipal executive director said that he and his team noticed that some fish had washed the shore of Osu beach as they paraded along the beach to ensure that Covid-19 safety protocols were met.

Nii Adjei Tawiah said that they thought the fish probably came from a large trawler landing at sea, and they didn’t bother until they noticed something different about the fish.

“Those who were around chose some of them. But this continued all day yesterday and we still didn’t see anything bad until this morning (Saturday) when we realized this is very strange and we have to look into it. “

“By midmorning, the color of some of the fish started to change. We have also noticed that even when you cut them, the inside looks like glue. Then we suspect that something is wrong, ”he said.

However, he stated that although they suspect that the fish are not good for consumption, they cannot conclude on sight until the tests are done.

Mr. Tawiah revealed that the Municipal Director of Health has been on the beach to take samples of the fish for analysis.

“Because it is a public holiday, before we know anything it will be around Tuesday,” he added.

Some people are suspected of having been on shore to collect some of the fish, and thus to make sure they don’t get back into the market or into the public domain, Tawiah said he and his team secured the beach to prevent people choose them.

He said they will also clean the beach and bury the fish. He added that the Municipal Assembly also sent its information van to announce to the people to be careful with the fish.

Mr. Tawiah urged the public to not only stay away from fish on beaches, but also avoid buying and consuming fish that come in various fish sizes and at a low selling price.

“The main fishermen explained to us that these fish are different from those brought by the Osu fishermen, they tend to go further. But these fish are very close to the coast, so if there is something to buy, that is the differentiation that we have to draw. Let people know that they are not supposed to buy this type of fish and that they should focus on what the fishermen normally bring. “
