Lionel Messi once again showed that he is in a league of his own with the goal that leads to Pelé as the player with the most goals in the same club in the history of the game.
He matched Pelé’s record at Santos with 643 at the weekend and with a goal of 644 he surpassed one and capped an inspired performance to lead Barcelona to their second away win of the season.
“I’ve said it many times lately, he seems happy,” said Ronald Koeman delighted after Messi led the demolition of Valladolid. ‘It is very important to the way we play. And it shows when he has smart players around him. ‘
He placed the first ball floating on the head of Clement Lenglet and with a header Jordi Masip passed.
It could have been two when Sergino Dest made it to the headline line and starting with Martin Braithwaite’s clever movie, Masip was forced to make a strong save.
Messi put Masip to the test with a nifty first move after Pedir had played him. Those two were connecting brilliantly and Barcelona’s new 3-5-2 system was working well with Messi on the loose alongside Braithwaite and unrecoverable for Valladolid.
Barcelona doubled their lead when Dest, making the most of his winger license, reached the baseline again and Braithwaite converted the ball from a yard out.
Messi scored his record-breaking goal in the 65th minute and, in addition to a historic goal, it was a nod to the future with Pedri sliding the ball for him to finish – Barcelona fans hope the budding combination is a few years older.
“They are both smart players, so it’s no wonder they understand each other well,” Lenglet said after the match. “We knew how important this game was,” he added. Barcelona would have been 11 points behind the leaders, Atlético de Madrid, if they had not achieved the victory.
They could have expanded their lead later. On both occasions, Philippe Coutinho, as a substitute, and Messi saw the shots hit from the foot of the post.
Braithwaite also passed and Messi looked less happy as he drove the ball into the side net instead of playing back to him.
Other than that, it was smiles on all sides, not so much from Antoine Griezmann, who had been left out of the remaining lineup and was not called up as one of the second-half changes.
At least you will be pleased that in this demo you are still playing for a team that could fight for the title. They stay 8 points off the pace, but playing this way there is hope in 2021.
