Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has reiterated his intentions to sign Memphis Depay from Lyon in January after their failed summer search.
The former Manchester United striker appeared to be heading to the Camp Nou before the transfer deadline, but no deal could be reached after Barcelona’s finances were seriously affected this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While Depay has spoken of his pride in being the captain of the French team and his desire to send it back to the Champions League, his former head of the national team still wants to sign the Dutchman before his contract expires next summer.
AD asked Koeman if he would move for him in the January transfer window, and he replied, ‘It’s a possibility. I will try because I want to have him at Barcelona, but I don’t know what the club’s financial situation will be then. We will have to wait.
Barça’s inability to move players in the summer was a major obstacle that prevented the proposed transfer from becoming a reality, as players like Ousmane Dembele and Phillippe Coutinho remained at Camp Nou.
Antoine Griezmann has also been linked to a pullout after he publicly complained that Koeman played him out of position to the right of Barcelona’s attack.
Barcelona recently released a grim set of financial figures, showing a loss of £ 88 million amid the coronavirus crisis, which plagued its summer transfer hopes.
“Everything was ready, but because of the rules, we knew we had to sell a player first,” Koeman confirmed. ‘In the end, that didn’t happen. We wanted Memphis because he is a great player and because he has qualities that I think we lack, including the ability to play deep in his game.
However, Depay commented on Friday: ‘I am very happy to be in Lyon. I am proud to be a Lyon player and captain. Things have been misunderstood. What is said in the media is not always true. It is true that some clubs were interested in me and went ahead, but in the end no deal was made. ”
When asked about the possibility of a move in January, he replied: ‘That’s in four months, we’ll see. My thoughts are with Lyon.
Barcelona have gotten off to a good start to the La Liga season and have scored seven points in their first three games, traveling to Getafe on Saturday and hosting Ferencvaros in their first match of the Champions League group stage three days later.
Barça will host Real Madrid in the first Clásico of the season next Saturday.
