Klopp says Liverpool reaped rewards for their plan to target Kepa Arrizabalaga

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said they planned to target Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and was rewarded with his second goal.

Such a mistake should not have occurred at this level, even Chelsea manager Frank Lampard called it a clear mistake, but the Blues could have fallen into Liverpool’s trap in the 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge.

It was obvious Chelsea struggled even to get out of her own half every time she had possession.

Klopp’s famous high pressure rendered Chelsea’s midfield useless in transitions, with desperate passes from Hail Mary to Timo Werner often the only outlet.

According to StatsBomb (via FBRef), Liverpool’s three forwards – Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino – made a combined 18 successful pressures in 47 attempts.

To put it in perspective, the entire Chelsea team had just 33 successful pressures throughout the game.

Arrizabalaga’s obvious lack of confidence didn’t help either and Chelsea paid the price.

Klopp told Liverpool’s official website: “I love that because we have a lot of these situations, we chase the goalkeeper.

“I think that in the first half Sadio [Mane] I was very close to blocking it there, but you just have to.

“I love when we get rewarded for these kinds of situations.”
