Klopp: return of Anfield fans gave Liverpool players goosebumps

The Premier League champions gifted the 2,000 spectators in attendance at Anfield with a convincing victory over Wolves.

Jurgen Klopp celebrated a “perfect” night when Liverpool welcomed fans to Anfield with a 4-0 defeat of Wolves.

Since the city of Liverpool was recently placed on Tier 2 of the UK government’s tiered restriction system, 2,000 fans were allowed to attend Sunday’s game.

It was the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic that fans were allowed to attend games.

Liverpool were crowned league champions for the first time in 30 years in June, but lifted the trophy at Anfield in July behind closed doors.

And Klopp had nothing but positive things to say after the game, as he saw his players treat the assistants with an excellent performance.

Klopp on “perfect night” for Liverpool

“It was a really perfect night, to be honest,” the Liverpool manager told Amazon Prime Sport.

“If 10 months ago someone had told us we had a home game and only 2,000 people would show up, we would have thought: ‘Okay, proper crisis, football must be really bad.’

“And now tonight was so nice, it was so nice. We went out to warm up and we all had goose bumps, it was like ‘OMG!’

“I told the guys in the last meeting that we will have no idea what it will be like, so if it’s good we have to use it, and if it’s bad we have to ignore it. That’s how it is.”

“It was much better [than I hoped]It was perfect, the noise people made. They were alert, you could see, feel and smell that they waited so long.

“Everyone here, the Kop and the Main Stand, were here to support a soccer team.”

Liverpool claimed a resounding victory thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip’ and an own goal by Wolves’ Nelson Semedo.

Klopp came to agree that the return of the fans helped inspire his players to reach greater heights in the second half than had been, in its early stages at least, a cautious encounter.

He continued: “We are so used to playing without a crowd. Every little positive you can get at this point in life is generally enjoyable.

“When you read in the newspaper that the vaccine was coming, it was as if, whatever the weather was outside, the sun was shining for all of us.

“And that’s how it was tonight in the second half, it’s so much more enjoyable when people are involved.

“This game would not be the game we all love if we always played it without fans, but we have to do it in the moment.

“If it makes any sense, it’s just that we appreciate these things: 2,000 or 3,000 and hopefully 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 in the weeks and months ahead.

“Normal is returning and you appreciate it even more.”
