Fran Kirby scored two of Sam Kerr’s three goals in Chelsea’s WSL victory over West Ham on Sunday in the Women’s Champions League Round of 32, first leg: Benfica Women v Chelsea WomenVenue of events: Campus Caixa Futebol, Lisbon Date: Wednesday December 9 Kick off: 15:00 GMT
Fran Kirby is in “the shape of her life” as she prepares to lead Chelsea’s Women’s Champions League challenge in the round of 16 against Benfica, according to Blues manager Emma Hayes.
England striker Kirby has battled injuries and illnesses this season but has looked strong in recent weeks.
And Hayes is excited about her attacking options when the Blues take on the Portuguese champions in Lisbon.
“Fran is setting new standards in every game,” Hayes told the club’s website.
“She probably has the shape of her life and is a great team player.”
Kirby, 27, scored two of Australian striker Sam Kerr’s three goals in a 3-2 Women’s Super League win over West Ham on Sunday.
“She is contributing in many ways on and off the court and the maturing process is a testament to that,” Hayes said. “She, along with Sam, Beth [England], Pernille [Harder], they are beginning to really find their feet.
“Everyone was happy for the attacking players at the weekend because we know the pressure that is put on them.
“We have built a team to cope with the demands. Everybody drives me crazy about playing time so this is an opportunity for the team to show itself and I’m sure there will be plenty of games for everyone.”
Hayes says the reigning women’s Super League champions are enjoying getting back into the European spotlight after missing out last season.
“We are excited,” Hayes added. “We know that last year we were out of this competition because the national quality was not good enough.
“You have to change your mind. Refereeing is different, the opponent in terms of how he plays his game is different than what you are used to in the WSL.”
