Kieran Tierney has backed Neil Lennon to overhaul the Rangers and lead Celtic to ten in a row.

The Parkhead boss heads into Saturday’s Old Firm clash 16 points behind Steven Gerrard.

And the Celtic board has already committed to reviewing the team’s progress early in the New Year.

Despite giving up his childhood idols for Arsenal in a record £ 25 million deal, however, Scotland defender Tierney has backed former boss Lennon to make history by completing the big breakout.

Speaking to BT Sports Scottish Football Extra, Tierney said: ‘I think he’s the right man. One of my regrets in football is that I only had a few months to work with him, because I loved him.

‘Unfortunately, I was injured for a while. But it was brilliant for me.

‘It made you feel great. Going out on the field made you feel like you can beat anyone.

So I think that’s exactly what players need now.

“They need confidence in themselves, they need confidence in the team, and I think he can do that.”

Saturday’s victory would put the Scottish champions 13 points adrift with three games in hand.

But Tierney believes a 10th consecutive title is still standing, and it would feel even sweeter after the troubles of fan protests that followed an early exit from Europe and the Betfred Cup.

I think they would do much better with the position they are in, being a few points behind.

‘Imagine doing that and coming back and winning it by ten? I think that would be great.

Usually in the last two years they are the ones on top and they are the ones being hunted.

“It’s a new challenge for some of the guys, but there are a lot of people who have done it before.

“They have the experience they need and they also have the manager they need, he has been there before.

“So it’s a new challenge for some, but it’s a challenge that I’m sure the dressing room will enjoy and the last few weeks have also been brilliant.”
