Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor says Kevin-Prince Boateng may return to the team, but he admits there are some issues that need to be resolved first.
Attacker Besiktas has not played for Ghana since 2014, as he is serving an indefinite suspension imposed on him by the administration of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) led by Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Kevin was suspended after he failed to comply with the disciplinary rules at the Black Stars camp during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The 33-year-old is said to have used a vulgar speech about then-coach Kwasi Appiah, which led to his removal from the tournament.
Akonnor at his first press conference said he had spoken to Kevin and that he did not want to play for Ghana again.
However, last week Kevin admitted in an Instagram live chat with his brother, Jerome Boateng, that he didn’t like the way things ended and would like a second chance.
“With the national team, I didn’t like the way it ended because they gave me so much. But you never know, maybe I can go back and play one more time, “Boateng said.
His comments dominated sports programs last weekend.
Former Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston said on Sports Link on Saturday that Kevin should be called on condition that he is playing well at club level, but admitted that the final decision rests with Akonnor.
And in an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, Akonnor offered an answer. He said Kevin, with whom he has a great relationship, is always welcome, but his problems with the GFA must be resolved first.
If Kevin Prince Boateng is available? He has played before. You have done well. There were some issues that I don’t think we can deny, but if he is doing well and is playing actively and is a strong and experienced player, why not?
“Whatever it is, I really need to talk to the FA about it, but it will be welcome. There are some issues that I can’t talk about, but if you’re interested [he can come].
“The other day, during the press conference, I had a conversation with him and the story was different. I return later [to clarify]. When I got to Germany, he was now coming to Hertha Berlin. I know him very well. He was a very tough boy, ”Akonnor told the interviewer, Benedict Owusu.
Kevin-Prince Boateng has been crowned 15 times by Black Stars, scoring two goals.
