The Ketu Sur Municipality in the Volta Region has been identified as an emerging access point for the spread of the coronavirus in the region.

This is because the municipality has so far registered 11 of the 16 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the region.

Six of the 11 cases were imported, while the rest 5 were detected during a routine contact tracing exercise.

Dr. Senanu Dzokoto, Volta Regional Deputy Director of Health Services in charge of Public Health

In a telephone interview, Volta’s deputy director of health services in charge of public health, Dr. Senanu Dzokoto, indicated that education, surveillance and follow-up of contacts would improve in the municipality.

He added that massive controls and tests would be carried out by officers from the various border security agencies, port health personnel, commercial drivers and passengers to guarantee the early identification of infected people for better management of the pandemic.

“When we do all of this, we can locate infected people early and isolate them early to prevent further spread [of the virus]”, he said.

He further noted that this approach would help prevent potential runs of the virus from experiencing severe representation of the disease, especially the elderly and people with underlying health problems.

Lack of PPE for front-line workers

Dr. Dzokoto denied claims that there is a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for front-line workers in the region, adding that “the expectations of some health workers are not in line with what they really need “

“Due to the anxiety, fear and apprehension of some of the [health] Personally, when you make them work in places where they have to wear a face mask, some expectations are that they should wear a gown, a face mask, a glove, a cap, a face shield, and company, ”he explained.

He said that the regional health directorate has received enough PPE to be distributed to the 515 health facilities in the Volta region.

“Our stores are even getting too crowded, we don’t have room to pack the PPE, we hope that [health facilities] will come for them at the weekend, ”he said.

However, Dr. Dzokoto called for a consensual approach to fighting the coronavirus without partisan policies to deal with the pandemic head-on.
