Arsenal legend Martin Keown has explained how his former club can bring out the best in forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Keown has urged head coach Mikel Arteta to switch to a 4-2-1-3 formation in the Premier League in a bid to achieve success in Europe. Arsenal have not won in their last EPL games, leaving them 14th on the record. Club captain,
Aubameyang, who scored 22 goals last season in the Premier League, has struggled in front of goal and has only managed two this season and Keown believes the 4-2-1-3 formation will be the solution.
“Last week against the Wolves, who after three years of using a back three have now abandoned that system, Arsenal lost 2-1,” the former player wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“They faced an opponent who used, in the form of Daniel Podence, a No. 10 safety with three players in front of him in a 4-2-1-3 formation.”
“Arsenal encountered such a big problem that it appears Arteta copied that system in their 4-1 loss to Rapid Vienna on Thursday, playing Alexandre Lacazette in the same role as Podence.”
“In the opening exchanges, Lacazette scored a wonderful goal from a distance and was feeding willing runners on either side of him in Nicolas Pepe and Reiss Nelson, with Eddie Nketiah in front. That made them that much more dangerous.”
The Gunners will travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to face Tottenham on Sunday.
