Kenyan Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe has said his comments about doubts about a Covid-19 vaccine were taken out of context.

A video of the minister questioning how vaccine developers could tell if someone was going to contract the coronavirus was shared online, drawing criticism.

When appearing before a parliamentary commission on Wednesday, the minister had said: “I, personally, to tell you the truth, I have many doubts about it because we are talking about a [vaccine] that prevents people from contracting the virus, “he said.

“How do you know I was going to get the virus in the first place?”

His comments drew criticism from many Kenyans online.

Kagwe has now said that his comments were an expression of doubt about the efficacy of the vaccine.

“This clip has been taken out of context as it was specifically directed at reports that Pfizer is developing a vaccine that is reported to be 95% effective; this response is driven by the reaction of the best doctors and if it is well oriented, perhaps we should all share it ”, said the minister in a statement.

He said the government will not commit funds for a vaccine whose efficacy is in doubt and will instead “wait for scientifically acceptable and global vaccines.”
