Lawyers for Assin Central deputy Kennedy Agyapong say he is “suffering complications from the Covid-19 condition he suffered last month.”

The explanation follows the legislator’s absence from court on Monday morning.

Expected to be his second appearance, Mr. Agyapong, who was dragged into Accra High Court by Judge Wuni, risks being sentenced to prison or a fine if found guilty of contempt.

The charges follow an earlier outburst by the MP during a live television show about a pending case.

But his lawyers on September 18 urged the court to halt the proceedings, explaining that they had filed an application in the Supreme Court challenging the jurisdiction of Judge Awuni to hear the matter.

Although Judge Wuni had argued that nothing prevented him from pursuing the case, he postponed the process until September 25 to hear more legal arguments from Mr. Agyapong’s team.

On September 25, the court was informed of a petition that Mr. Agyapong had sent to the Chief Justice alleging possible bias on the part of the judge.

However, the case proceeded when his charge was read and he pleaded guilty on his behalf.

But elaborating on why his client was unavailable, Agyapong’s lead attorney Kwame Gyan said they had attached a note from his doctor to be delivered to the court.

“Our client, the Honorable Kennedy Agyapong, suffered complications from the post-Covid-19 condition that he suffered last month.

“We arranged for him to seek treatment from the same doctor who treated him for Covid-19,” he said.

Judge Amos Wuni postponed the procedure until Thursday, October 1 for the doctor to appear to explain the note.
