The alarming rate of pediatric Covid-19 cases at Komfo Anokye University Hospital has forced authorities to conduct more research on the trend.
In 10 days, the hospital registered nine positive cases of Covid-19 among children, including an 11-day-old baby compared to 14 last year.
Some of the children are reported to have died from complications from Covid-19.
The head of the Children’s Health Directorate, Professor Sampson Antwi, told Joy News that the situation requires further investigation into the strain.
“The Covid strain that we are having now is really seriously affecting children as well. If in less than 2 weeks we receive 9 cases, we are not going where we are going to go, ”said the director of the Children’s Health Directorate, Professor Sampson Antwi.
“We are having a large increase in positive cases of Covid and the disease initially, it was said that the children were saved. We had 14 all last year, but this year, just the 10-day streak, we got 9 positive cases, “he added.
Komfo Anokye University Hospital registered 14 pediatric cases of Covid-19 in the last 5 months.
Recorded active cases of Covid-19 in children were among 504 samples taken at the facility.
After testing, 251 tested positive, representing 49.8 percent.
KATH doctors are concerned about the infection rate among children.
The head of the Children’s Health Directorate, Professor Sampson Antwi, says more research needs to be done.
“I think we have to do more research and find out if the new strain is different,” he said.
“I don’t know if the clinical cases we are testing belong to the new strain. What I know is that they say the ones tested at the airport showed some of the new strains. We do not know if they have reached the community.
“It seems to be more violent or contagious.”
Professor Antwi says that although previous studies suggest that children were saved from Covid-19, the trend has changed.
“Probably the antibodies against colds that children get that protected them in some way may not be able to do the same with this current strain.”
Meanwhile, Komfo Anokye University Hospital says it can no longer admit any more patients because its wards are full.
Officials have called for a Covid-19 treatment center for children.
