Cristiano Ronaldo’s double in the first half allowed Juventus to climb to second place in the Serie A standings with a 2-0 win over Cagliari on Saturday.
After a relatively uneventful international break for Ronaldo, with a goal in three matches for Portugal, he scored in the 38th minute in Turin, finding the net for the fifth straight league game.
Four minutes later, the 35-year-old forward struck brilliantly at the far post to double his team’s lead, taking it to eight league goals of the season in just four starts.
Ragnar Klavan thought he had put Cagliari back into the game in the second half, but his header was ruled offside in preparation.
Ronaldo became a supplier twice when Juventus were looking to score again, but poor results meant the hosts were unable to increase their account.
The victory allowed Andrea Pirlo’s undefeated team to close the gap with leader AC Milan to one point, with Milan playing in Napoli on Sunday. Cagliari was 11th.
“When you come back from the international break it is always difficult, but we came back in the right mood from the first minute,” Pirlo said.
“We played the game well, we needed a game like this.”
Cagliari showed a lot of confidence in the early stages, and Juventus looked shaky after taking just three wins in their last seven matches before the international break.
However, after recovering from the COVID-19 after an ankle injury before traveling to play for his country, Ronaldo looked sharper than all those around him when he took over.
His first goal spike was distinctive, cutting inside twice before launching a low shot into the net, but the second was even better, adjusting when the ball deflected behind him before launching it home.
Elsewhere, on Saturday, Atalanta drew 0-0 in Spezia and Lazio beat bottom side Crotone 2-0.
