The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has said that attacks on the judiciary by social commentator Kevin Taylor not only affect the individual judges mentioned in his broadcasts, but also undermine the country’s rule of law.
This follows what the association calls “Kelvin Taylor’s relentless attacks on the Judicial Service in his social media broadcast, dubbed ‘With all due respect, High Silence Media.’
In a statement issued by JUSAG and signed by its National President, Alex Nartey on Tuesday, February 2, 2020, the association said: “The Judiciary is an arm of the state established to resolve conflicts in accordance with the law; impartially and effectively to all types of people without fear or favoritism, affection or ill will. The Judicial Power has played over the years this sanctified role within the dictates of the 1992 Constitution. It has existed for more than one hundred and forty years ”.
JUSAG explained that it “exists first and foremost to play various supportive roles to ensure that the Judicial Service fulfills its constitutional mandate. The association has in the past voiced its contempt for the increase in inflammatory statements and irresponsible behavior by some people and their protégés on the nation’s radio airwaves, as well as on the broader online social media platforms. ”
He noted that “he will not sit still and allow some selfish individuals to tarnish the image of the Judicial Service.”
According to JUSAG, Mr. Taylor “has resorted to making wild and unsubstantiated accusations with the aim of defaming the image of the Judicial Service, which we consider unacceptable and reprehensible.”
Citing some of Taylor’s unprintable allegations, in addition to “other nasty attacks on Justice Sophia AB Akuffo, former Chief Justice Clemence J Honyenuga, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour,” the association described them as “totally unacceptable.”
He went on to say: “Those comments, if they are not an attempt to incite hatred among the general public or to ridicule the Judicial Service, they are no less a plague on the administration of justice in the Republic of Ghana. Having a duty as Ghanaians to protect mother Ghana, we want to make it clear that attacks on the Judicial Service not only affect the individual judges you mention, but also undermine the rule of law that Ghana as a nation is nurturing.
Therefore, the association admonished Ghanaians “not to believe such baseless accusations by individuals like Kelvin Taylor, that our sacred institution will suffice for their personal interests. The principle has always been that ‘he who alleges must prove. “If someone has a reason to doubt the integrity of a member of the Judicial Service, the best thing to do is to follow the procedure that will allow him to present evidence.”
In addition, he called on each and “each one to treat these baseless accusations with the contempt they deserve. Comments from unscrupulous people who don’t care send Ghana into a state of anarchy to score cheap political points. ”
JUSAG also asked Mr. Taylor to “review his modus operandi and do the right thing by submitting the appropriate petitions to the appropriate statutory bodies in Ghana for investigations. Anything other than this is an affront to the rule of law, and the same must be stopped immediately. ”
