Jurgen Klopp said he should spend cash on the new starting center-back instead of the backup option: Ghana Soccer Latest News, Live Scores, Results

Jurgen Klopp has been told that it is best to hire a center back who will be good enough to start, not a backup option.

It comes as Liverpool face the absences of first-choice pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

The Dutchman was eliminated from the season after a challenge from Jordan Pickford in October.

While Gómez was ruled out in the long term after suffering an injury in international service.

It has left Klopp scratching his head over who to play at the position, with Fabinho falling from midfield to the baseline.

Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips, Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip have played alongside the Brazilian.

But with the January transfer window open, Klopp can now splurge on a new center, with several on the radar.

Brighton star Ben White, Schalke ace Ozan Kabak and Lille defender Sven Botman have been linked.

And former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has advised Klopp to avoid panic buying.

He has urged the German to sign a star from the first team, even in good health, saying: “I wouldn’t say they should go for cover.

“I think if they can get someone they want, that they’ve been tracking, that they really like and could potentially be a first team player, yeah, try to do it soon.

“But don’t go buying coverage, they have coverage. If you’re looking for someone, it shouldn’t be a panic buy.

“They waited for Van Dijk for probably six months, nine months, they wanted him before, right? And they waited because that was what they wanted.

“So I wouldn’t go for cover, no. If I could go find someone I really wanted and really thought could improve the team, I would try to make it happen in January instead of waiting until the summer.

“But it’s easier said than done because I imagine the type of player they are seeing will be in the Champions League clubs where they are not going to want to sell. It is difficult for Liverpool.

“I am not aware of being in the training field to see the quality of the younger players, how much confidence Jurgen Klopp has in them, [Nat] Phillips and [Rhys] Williams, I’m not sure. Then we will have to wait and see.

“My instinct is that they will try to do something in January, that’s my hunch.”
