Jurgen Klopp praised Mo Salah’s jaw-dropping Liverpool stats, as he said in silent amazement: “It’s one record after another!”

The forward added another record to his growing roster of entries into the Anfield hall of fame, with a goal against Midtjylland making him the club’s top scorer in Champions League history.

The goal brought him to 23, one ahead of Steven Gerrard, and also places him second behind great Anfield on the Reds’ list of all-time European scorers.

It’s a remarkable number in just three and a half seasons, and Klopp said: “It’s record after record, and I’m pretty sure he’s proud of it… he should be!

Mohamed Salah’s goal makes him the highest-scoring player in Liverpool’s history in the Champions League

“He is an exceptional player, just an absolutely exceptional player and since we’ve been together a lot of things really fell into place. But he also appreciates the help of the team. Even his incredible number of goals alone would not be enough for us to succeed.

“But it is truly exceptional. Nobody doubted it, but if you need numbers to prove it, he fulfills it too. “

Klopp put Salah at risk on a night when he was expected to put all of his main stars to rest, with Liverpool already guaranteed to qualify as a group winner, but the coach insisted the player was determined to show up. “He wants to play soccer.

“I was in contact with Mo, he had no problems and that’s why we left him in the field, and there were no problems.”

Salah gave Liverpool the lead over Midtjylland after just 55 seconds

If Klopp was happy with an exhibition in which 18-year-old Billy Koumetio made a senior debut and 19-year-old Leighton Clarkson his first top-level test, he was less happy with VAR, which controversially ruled out a late Liverpool winner.

Sadio Mane was considered to have driven while helping Taki Minamino, but the replays seemed to clearly show that the ball had hit the arm of a Midtjylland defender, with Klopp saying:

“I used to be one of the people who said that VAR is a good idea, but I’m not sure if I would say it again.”
