Real Madrid star Luka Jovic is reportedly facing a six-month prison sentence in Serbia after breaking coronavirus rules when he flew home to a party in Belgrade.
Real Madrid told their players to isolate themselves after the virus outbreak in March, but Jovic broke the quarantine to travel back to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday.
The forward was heavily criticized in his home country at the time and, according to Serbian agency Tanjug, Marca reported, he is on trial for violating the rules and faces up to six months in prison.
Serbian newspapers also criticized the striker, explaining that he had celebrated his girlfriend’s birthday on the streets of the capital.
Blic wrote: “Instead of isolating himself, he had fun all over Belgrade”, while Informer said: “Luka did something very stupid. He came out of quarantine in Madrid, with the club and, despite all the warnings, he returned to Serbia. .
The Serbian prosecution claims that Jovic did not comply with the required health protocols upon arrival in the country.
According to RTS, Jovic had to pay a fine of £ 27,000 which may help soften the punishment imposed.
Real said that at the time the forward had special permission to fly home for medical reasons. All Real staff had been sent home after club basketball player Trey Thompkins tested positive.
Jovic was one of the Serbs playing abroad and was criticized by the country’s politicians for returning to the country during the height of the pandemic.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said: “We have the negative example of our soccer stars who earn millions and have ignored the obligation to isolate themselves in order to return home.”
The Serbian government had asked citizens working abroad not to return from countries with a high infection rate. At that time, Spain had the fourth highest mortality rate.
Jovic apologized but also defended himself in response to the comments, saying: ‘Upon my return to Serbia they tested me and I tested negative. It is a shame that the others were not professionals in their work and did not give me specific instructions on how I should behave during isolation.
I apologize to everyone if I have in any way put someone in danger. I hope that together we can get through this. Serbia has my full support, we will overcome it together. ‘
The forward has had a difficult time at Real Madrid since joining a £ 58m deal in 2019.
After scoring 17 Bundesliga goals with Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018-19 campaign, Jovic only managed two goals in all of last season.
He was unable to secure a move in the summer despite Manchester United being tied to a loan deal.
Zidane recently insisted that the forward has a future at the Bernabéu after Real outcast Borja Mayoral, who is currently on loan at Roma, assured that the coach wanted to get rid of the 22-year-old in the summer.
Zidane said: ‘Jovic is a Real Madrid player. I want Jovic here.
“Many people can have their opinion, they have the right to have an opinion. We have to live with it. But Jovic is a Real Madrid player. ‘
The forward has made four appearances this season but has failed to find the back of the net.
