José Mourinho again points to Bruno Fernandes and Manchester United in Tottenham’s win against Leeds

José Mourinho has again targeted Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes, arguing that penalty-scoring players shouldn’t be among the Premier League’s top scorers.

Fernandes ranks third in the Premier League scorers table this season, scoring 11 goals for United, five of which have come from penalties.

Only Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min have scored more than Fernandes, with Spurs star Son scoring in his team’s 3-0 win over Leeds United.

It was Son’s 100th goal for Spurs and Mourinho praised the attacker’s achievements after the match.

However, he also couldn’t resist trying to criticize Fernandes for his penalty record.

He said: “I am very happy for him, I am very happy that now people realize what a player he is.

“I think we all have to explain to people who he is too.

“To get the Puskas award, to be scoring 100 goals for Tottenham and to be perhaps among the top three scorers in the Premier League without penalties.

“Some players score 10 goals a season on penalties and, by the way, I’m not talking about Harry Kane.

“I’m so happy for Son.”

It is not the first time that Mourinho has targeted United and Fernandes on their penalty shootout record.

Speaking at the end of last season, the former Old Trafford boss praised his compatriot’s form since moving to United in January, but said his scoring record was reduced to penalties.

He told Record: “Bruno came in, he was fit, he played very well, he improved United and he also proved to be a great penalty taker, one of the best in the world because he had about 20 to score.

Mourinho continued his complaints this season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joked that the Spurs coach noted that Shkendija’s goal posts were too small ahead of a Europa League tie.

Manchester United extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to 10 games, as they recorded a deserved 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes did the job as United kept up the pressure on defending champions and league leaders Liverpool.

United’s next game is against City in the Carabao Cup semi-final midweek.

The Spurs boss responded that Solskjaer was too concerned about the size of the penalty areas.

He said: “I understand that the dimensions of the poles are not important to him.

“The important thing to him is the dimensions of the 18-yard box.

“He would never agree to play with a 17-yard box. I think he would prefer a 22-yard box. For him it would be better.”
